Everything and Only Brentwood

Beware Of Potholes

Writer's picture: Andrew ReedAndrew Reed

People have big problems these days but a relatively small one, depending on how much your wheels and tires cost, are the big potholes that materialize all over Brentwood after a heavy rain. We won't bury the lead and tell you now, you should not be driving in the curb lane, where they are most prevalant. Wheels on an average BMW or Tesla can cost as much as $1,000 a piece, with the tire costing another $500. Porsche and other supercars are a multiple of that. Those with SUVs are safer, as the tires are built for bumps. OVER 50 cars fell victim to this particular menace, and were lined up across from the Luxe Hotel entrance like parents waiting for their kid after prom.

The city’s aging infrastructure, coupled with fluctuating weather patterns and heavy traffic, contributes to the persistent pothole problem. Rain, though rare, seeps into cracks in the pavement, expanding and contracting with temperature changes, causing the surface to fracture.

In 2023 alone, Los Angeles city crews reportedly filled over 300,000 potholes, yet the issue persists. Neighborhoods from the San Fernando Valley to South LA routinely report hazardous road conditions, which can damage vehicles, cause accidents, and slow commutes. The economic impact is significant, with drivers facing repair costs for tires, suspension, and alignment.

City officials have implemented initiatives like "Operation Pothole Blitz," focusing on rapid response to citizen complaints. Still, the underlying challenge remains: long-term street maintenance requires more than quick patches. Residents often voice frustration about the uneven distribution of resources, with wealthier districts seemingly receiving faster repairs than historically underserved neighborhoods.

As LA continues to grow, balancing immediate pothole repairs with comprehensive infrastructure investments is crucial. The city must prioritize durable materials and innovative paving techniques to mitigate the pothole epidemic. After all, smooth streets are more than a convenience—they are essential for safety, efficiency, and the city's modern identity.
