Everything and Only Brentwood

Brentwood Private Security Surge

Writer: Adam DavisAdam Davis

Brentwood has long been home to a range of alarm and patrol services, traditionally dominated by companies like ACS, ADT, and more recently, SSA, which primarily employs retired law enforcement officers. As the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) struggles with staffing shortages—currently more than a thousand officers short—and as political challenges such as lawsuits and defunding efforts make law enforcement positions less appealing, private security companies have grown increasingly vital. These firms have proven to be more efficient, particularly in responding to non-life-threatening emergencies.

Now, two newcomers—Nastec and Elite—are aiming to expand their services beyond the more established areas of Homewood and Gretna Green, targeting broader parts of Brentwood. These companies offer patrols for approximately $400 per month, with the promise of a dedicated patrol vehicle covering a limited geographic area. As they compete for local business, Nastec and Elite are reaching out to residents in Bundy Canyon and other areas outside of Brentwood Park and the Glen.

While these services have the potential to improve security, there’s a catch: coordination among homeowners remains a major challenge. If residents could unite behind a single service, the neighborhood could see more consistent coverage and enhanced service. However, even on exclusive streets like Homewood, achieving full participation has proven difficult, with compliance rates rarely exceeding 60%.

Before signing up for any security service, residents should carefully consider the terms and be wary of "bait and switch" tactics. Make sure that the patrol areas won’t expand as more neighbors sign on, potentially stretching resources thin and diluting the level of service. It’s crucial to secure clear guarantees from the service provider to avoid any unpleasant surprises.

In short, while the influx of private security services may bring increased safety, it's important to do your homework. Take the time to research, ask questions, and ensure that your neighborhood’s specific needs will be met without compromising on quality or coverage.
